ole oleoleole….
(…Brazil, in my case, or Rocio will kick my ass)
Rocio tells me that the World Cup is Important because it bonds all the peoples of the world in a sense of united brotherandsisterhood, and provides the Only Truly Equitable Field in which nations can compete based simply on skill. It is Pure Sport. And will bring about peace to all peoples by giving us a way to join hands across cultures: even if you have nothing in common with someone from another culture, you can still trash talk their soccer team and then you will be communicating within a shared culture, etc. Thus uniting the world in joy.
I said, except
I am persuaded, at least enough to tag this post “Holiday.”
It is true, Rebecca. Take, for instance, what happened this morning. In preparation for this afternoon’s Brasil game, I wore my jersey to work. Before getting to campus, I stopped at Cafe Beyu for a cup of coffee where a handsome Kenyan gentleman struck up a conversation with me about my jersey. We chatted about our predictions for this afternoon’s game, as well as about the results of the games over the past couple of days. Despite my knowing nothing about Kenyan culture, and he knowing nothing about Brasilian culture, we were able to have a great morning conversation about futebol.
And if only mere Hotness of Men could bring the world together in unity and peace… (sigh)
